The most wide-spread type of weight-losing diets is low-
carb. The main requirement of a low-carb diet is to reduce
the intake of carbohydrates since they are the main reason
for obesity. This is so because our body does not process
carbohydrates, especially simple ones (like sugar and
starch) but saves them in the form of fat.
There have always been people with weight problems, but the
20th century brought a new phenomenon - poor diet and fast
food. People are also affected by obesity due to the fact
that "bad" carbs (refined sugar, white bread, etc.) are
cheaper than quality food. Add stress to it, and it becomes
clear why there are so many overweight men, women, and
children.
Low-carb diets achieve better results when backed by other
changes of habits. The changes in eating, drinking, and
living habits do not substitute the diet itself but they
definitely contribute to the overall success of a diet.
When on a low-carb diet, there is no doubt that change in
habits is inevitable. The obvious change is the assortment
of foods that must be kicked out of one's daily regime. But
there is more to a successful low-carb diet -- it does
require a complete change of habits -- eating, drinking, etc.
A very important tip for successful low-carb dieting is that
you should drink more water a day -- 8 or 10 glasses is
optimal. This might be a bit of a challenge, since most
people do not have the habit of drinking pure water, but if
you add some lemon juice or even ice, you might find that
water does not taste so bad. The good news is that once you
start drinking water regularly throughout the day, you will
eventually enjoy it more and more.
It is easier, if you have your first glass of water in the
morning, right after getting up and just before breakfast.
If you do not have breakfast, now the time has come to
change this bad habit, too. Breakfast is extremely important
for weight control and for good health, that it is worth
getting up 20 minutes earlier than usual, in order to have
the time to eat something in the morning.
The role of breakfast is so enormous, because another secret
of successful low-carb diets is that one should have daily
three meals and two snacks. The most severe mistake is to
eat your daily dose at once! It could be the hardest change
in habit for many people, but the "three meals, two snacks"
rule is really very important.
The next change in your eating habits is excluding all foods
that are made of potatoes, flour, sugar, rice or corn
because it is not possible for them to be low-carb. You can
replace them with fresh or grilled vegetables.
It is even better, if you manage to find the time to cook
for yourself ~ there are plenty of quick and easy recipes
and this way you will know for sure what exactly the
contents is. Besides, in the long run, this solution is
cheaper. You only need an initial investment in a good set
of food and storage containers.
The next useful tip is to eat slowly, chewing every single
bite of your food. This will help you also to feel the taste
of food. As already mentioned, do not overeat at dinner.
Basically it is best to intake your daily input of carbs in
small portions earlier in the day instead a big portion at
dinner.
